Psychologist, Carolyn Kaufman, reminds writers that a magical worldrequires the creation of natural laws that specifically fit your setting and character choices.

Ask yourself the following questions:

Which characters can use the magic?

Where does the magic come from?

How is the magic used?

What are the limits of the magic?

What are the consequences of using various kinds of magic?

Do different characters possess the ability to use different kinds of magic?

Your answers need to make sense and follow the laws of your created universe, just as we have laws of nature to follow in our universe. Write down your universe rules first. Then fit your characters into it.

THIS MAY BE YOUR ONCE IN A LIFEETIME CHANCE TO RULE THE WORLD!

  1. Great questions! A related article from “Writer’s Relief” touches upon different aspects as well, equally important, such as geography, weather, races etc. It’s fun making your own world but LOTS to consider! http://www.writersrelief.com/blog/2009/06/genre-fiction-rules-find-out-if-your-novel-meets-publishers-and-literary-agents-criteria-for-publication/
