I would not normally comment about my special needs child here, but something happened today that reminded me of what a miracle it is to be able to read. My daughter Katelin cannot speak and all attempts at real communication have failed until today. Today she had her first experience with an eye gaze device that speaks for her. She picked it up within a couple of minutes and then the company rep. said the words I never expected to hear-”she may even learn to read using this”. Where I had hoped only to be able to ask her what she wants for lunch and the like, he’s telling me she’ll be able to eventually converse and just maybe learn to read.

This made me think about what a gift it is that authors give to everyone. The adventures, the laughter, the joy that is now figuratively at her fingertips makes me grateful. Grateful not only for her for this chance, but grateful for myself. It’s only because I’ve been on those adventures, laughed and been joyful myself that I understand this opportunity. Of course I read to her everyday, but it isn’t the same as being able to do it yourself and choose your own adventure.

So I say to those who might think of giving up trying to be published, don’t. Your book may be the miracle that opens a child’s eyes and heart and mind to a whole new world.
